Indigenous-Native
American Track for Recovery
INDIGENOUS:
An Innovative Approach
- A Holistic Approach -- Native
Americans come from diverse cultures and traditions with unique
differences and similarities. These beliefs and values give individual
identity. The concept of including mind, body and spirit to achieve
balance gives participants an alternative approach to address
treatment issues. Participants are encouraged to utilize the
varied traditional practices from their native communities in
addressing treatment issues.
- Methods -- Talking Circle is
a form of group therapy in which participants are seated in a
circle and connect the body, mind and spirit through the source
of the circle's power. All participants are allowed time to speak
freely with no interruption or fear of rejection or challenge.
The group closes with a brief prayer.
- Traditional Practices -- vary
for all natives. Some methods include: sweat lodge, Peyote Road,
Red Road and traditional healing ceremonies. These methods allow
a native approach that is perhaps never considered for treatment.
In other settings these traditional practices are encouraged
and supported and remain an option for each participant. The
experience may then be shared with others who want to follow
this path of traditional recovery.
- Our highly talented and committed
Native American Staff currently consists of five different counselors
and spiritual consultants from different tribal communities in
New Mexico.
